The Georgia Police Academy will be conducting its 15th Drug Recognition Expert School on September 22 thru October 2, 2003. The course trains officers to identify drug impairment and the drug categories responsible for the impairment. Officers are trained utlizing a standardized and systematic 12 step evaluation process. Training is divided into three phases: 1) nine day (72 hr.) classroom training, 2) field certification training conducted one weekend per month for three to six months at various locations, 3) final knowledge exam. Once all three phases have been completed students are certified through the International Association of Chief's of Police for a two year period. DRE's are required to attend and recertify every two years by attending an eight (8) hour update course. DRE is the most effective tool in Georgia for combating our drug impaired driving problem.
